Abstract
Though the many investigations have stressed on occurence of abnormal glucose metabolism following the prolonged thiazide administration, there are lacking studies on this subjects in this country. The standard oral glucose tolerance test was undertaken in seventy two patients who were comp ised of fifty two hypertensive cases, eight diabetics associated with hypertension, three diabetics with nephropathy, and nine cases with cirrhosis of the liver, before and after treatment of thiazide du ing the past five-years period in this hospital. We found definitely decreased glucose to tolerance in comparison with those before treatment of thiazide. We observed also that glucose tolerance returned rapidly to normal limits, when thiaxide were withdrawn. The glycemic curves following the intravenous injection of sodium rastinon were also observ in comparison, with untreated normal controls and diabetics, and thiazide treated diabetics. Intraveous rastinon test in thiazide treated diabetics showed the blood sugar response curves between those in normal persons and in diabetics, probably suggesting any disturbance in carbohydrate metabolism due to insulin deficiency.
